Girl with 270 million old rock

This is a new scan (this time from an Imacon scanner) of the Wave Rock in Hyden, Western Australia. This image was taken early morning, about 7am, just as sun was rising. I set my Yashica Mat-124g on a tripod and, just as I was ready to photograph, this young girl walked into the picture. She gives a sense of scale to this imposing rock.

Day 8/365

This little girl is probably over 130-years-old. The exposure was made using the tintype process. This dates the image from about 1860 to the early 20th century. The exposure is a direct positive on a thin sheet of iron with a dark lacquer used to support the photographic emulsion. A tinype could be developed, fixed and handed to the customer in just a few minutes after exposure (a bit like a Polaroid print today). This tintype measures 2 x 3 inches and originates from the United States.
