Two Mourning Cloak (or Camberwell Beauty, Nymphalis antiopa. le morio) butterflies. They hibernate through the winter and are the first large butterflies on the wing in Spring. These were feeding on sap escaping form a recently cut tree trunk, there were also several flies also feeding these juices. The one on the top has seen much better days I think.

Not the most "glamorous" pose spread-wing in the dirt; a Mourning Cloak (or Camberwell Beauty, Nymphalis antiopa. le morio) butterfly. They hibernate through the winter and are the first large butterflies on the wing in Spring.
