First snow. I don't think the chrysanthemums were psychologically prepared for it; I wasn't.

Verbascum thapsus, the great mullein, is a European plant that has adapted very successfully to living in N. America as a fairly common weed.

Sticky sage (Salvia glutinosa) is, as its name suggests, covered in sticky hairs. It has a strong aroma, not unpleasant but not sweet either. This is a male flower, and to my mind its white pollen on the anther makes it look like a "toothy" open mouth. When bees land on the platform they activate a lever mechanism that deposits the pollen grains on their backs. It's a beautiful example of floral engineering.

A yellow and red-striped goldenrod crab spider (Misumena vatia, Araignée crabe) with its meal. She was hiding, well camouflaged, beneath the petals of a black eyed Susan. It was obviously a very clean strike, between the head and the thorax, and probably happened so fast the fly would not have a seen it coming.

Sticky sage (Salvia glutinosa). This is not a native plant to Quebec, but seems to have established itself 'wild" in one very small patch of ground here, on the site of an old mansion that burned down in the 1940s. I imagine these are the descendants of plants from the garden of the mansion that have survived untended for over seventy years. It has a very strong, quite pleasant, citrus perfume.

The Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) also called Camberwell Beauty in UK. It is one of the first butterflies we see after the snow melts in spring, as it hibernates over winter.
(Le Morio).
