HWH - Grindon Lough [low tide]

08 Aug 2021 4 104
Grindon Lough in mid-July 2021. Lack of recent rain and a high rate of evaporation have considerably shrunk this lough, which has no beck as an exiting waterflow. Compare to a winter view, with a much higher water level. Hadrian's Wall runs along the ridge that forms the horizon, and the photographer has been travelling along the line of the Stanegate, the route of a Roman road that pre-dated Hadrian's Wall.

HWH - Cawfields Quarry

Frozen lake in Cawfields Quarry. (Haltwhistle is just over 2 1/4 miles to the south). Hadrian's Wall was here, until this section was destroyed by quarrying away the ridge - the hard dolerite [whinstone] intrusion outcrops known locally as the Great Whin Sill. Much of the eastern half Hadrian's Wall was built on top of the sill. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whin_Sill

O&S - wall path

Map of the Hadrian's Wall path, Haltwhistle is on there, somewhere. . Summer time sport is partly counting the wall walkers; the less sporting side is trying not to run over them. Parts of the route are diverted away from the direct route alongside the B6318 for very good safety reasons - such as poor route visibilty between oncoming vehicles (cars and HGVs)and walkers.
