I would suggest that the initial drop was due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the post 2022 losses have been at least partially due to the increases in the cost of living with a lack of spare cash / time for entertainment [also the desire to build up a "rainy day" fund]. Plus a change in habits "Lets go clubbing" just isn't as popular as it used to be among the 20somethings ... Use of "mobile payments" by age group. I presume that the older age groups use cash or direct debit cards rather than a wallet / app on a smart phone. There is a point of view that having actual cash in the hand helps some people to keep to their budget. . not my image : fair use & public information

In the UK, the Bank Of England uses base interest rate changes as a means to help control inflation. There is a marked lag in the responses of the inflation rate [CPI] to base rate changes. This base rate underlies all UK borrowing and savings interest. [Whether there really is a causal link I'm not fully convinced]. Not my Image ; fair use & public information
