The problem of NHS waiting times [for non-urgent surgery in particular] is continuing to vex. I suspect that at least part of the problem is the UK's aging population, added to systemic problems with over-controlling [expensive] non-medical management and political interference. Personally, I don't like the over-sized "super hospital" concept, nor what seems to be over-complicated & inefficient administration. Note : the dip and excessive rise in 2020/21 is the product of the measures needed to deal with the Covid-19 Pandemic. . not my image : fair use & public education

Following the pressures on the NHS of the covid pandemic, a rapid rise in longer waiting times has developed, more urgent cases are being dealt with reasonably promptly. However, less urgent matters continue to have increased waiting times, indeed some waits now exceed a year - a time span last seen around 2009. [SPECULATION - Some of this is due to staffing problems, which appear to have been exacerbated by brexit / immigration controls. The other facet may be a largely concealed political desire to re-invent a dominant private practice as per the american insurance based system, where the rich can afford it but other's can't].
