This large building is the RNLI College, the national training centre for the volunteer crews. Built 2003 and formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 28th July 2004. Recently, there have been around 1,500 crew members trained per year, with a capacity of up to 4,000 places annually. Courses range from the equivalent of a weekend to full weeks, on boat handling [for the new boats], navigation, sea survival and rescue techniques. The RNLI also operates "mobile classrooms" that visit the stations around the country. The building has 60 bedrooms, a bar and a restaurant. Other facilities include a 120 seater auditorium.
