To be replaced ... once the buffers etc are removed so the headstock can be extracted - and that's not as easy as you might think ...

Two of the buffer shroud / doughnut blanks, awaiting turning.

Still cutting the various holes in the replacement headstock. Green oak is quite hard to work, and is very likely to "shake" - these splits are along the grain and do not significantly affect the strength. Compare to the very decayed original ...

One shroud, plus insert. A little more finishing still to do, then the painting will follow.

The better half of the buffer shroud from 1173, it is quite a large doughnut - we think it would have been turned from green oak originally. [sorry about the mess in background ... someone got told !]

NER 1173, unwrapped and residing in the "Five Road Shed" - although generally in good condition, having been well-wrapped with a good quality tarpaulin, it has suffered from being stored outside. [Image supplied by owner and used with permission]
