NER1173 - the bad end

02 Jul 2024 25
The poorer condition end of the headstock - somewhat rotten and disintegrated.

NER1173 - detail of the buffer shroud

02 Jul 2024 26
The more complete buffer shroud and spacer block - the other side had already largely disintegrated - with the metal bearing insert roughly in place.

NER 1173 - headstock removed

29 Apr 2024 29
The detached "south end" headstock, one buffer shroud [with metal bearing insert] and the remains of one spacer block. SRR have been tasked to replicate one headstock, four shrouds, four spacers and four buffer pads.

NER 1173 - toilet compartment

10 Aug 2024 37
Brass fold down sink in the toilet compartment of NER1173. Some years ago now, this was ripped out by thieves; probably for the scrap value or possibly for sale into the marine restoration field, as some boats use a similar type of tip-up sink. Scan of image taken by EM

NER1173 - south end headstock

28 Apr 2024 23
To be replaced ... once the buffers etc are removed so the headstock can be extracted - and that's not as easy as you might think ...

NER1173 - shroud blanks

Two of the buffer shroud / doughnut blanks, awaiting turning.

NER1173 - Headstocks

21 Jul 2024 2 29
Still cutting the various holes in the replacement headstock. Green oak is quite hard to work, and is very likely to "shake" - these splits are along the grain and do not significantly affect the strength. Compare to the very decayed original ...

NER1173 - on the lathe

21 Jul 2024 25
Turning the shroud / doughnut is almost complete.

NER1173 - almost done

21 Jul 2024 25
One shroud, plus insert. A little more finishing still to do, then the painting will follow.

NER1173 - doughnut

21 Jul 2024 26
The better half of the buffer shroud from 1173, it is quite a large doughnut - we think it would have been turned from green oak originally. [sorry about the mess in background ... someone got told !]

NER1173 - south end buffers and drawgear

29 Apr 2024 26
Note the lengths of the buffer shanks and drawgear - which is why taking teh headstock off NER1173 was a little challenging.

NER1173 - traces of original lining and paint

29 Apr 2024 23
Some traces of the original [most recent ?] livery on the solebar. It is quite possible that as a "First" the lining would have been gold leaf overlying yellow / gold paint, more likely on the bodywork rather than the underframe.

NER1173 - Five Road Shed

27 Jul 2023 83
NER 1173, unwrapped and residing in the "Five Road Shed" - although generally in good condition, having been well-wrapped with a good quality tarpaulin, it has suffered from being stored outside. [Image supplied by owner and used with permission]
