|
A heavy duty stone-built bridge over the almost flow-less Chainley Burn, with the Vindolanda cafe etc on the far bank.
There has been very little rain over the past three months, so there is almost no water in the burn compared to the normal levels for a wet winter.
vin[22] - gardens

|
Part of the gardens at Chesterholm. In the distance is a modern interpretation of a Roman temple - and to it's right, an activity centre for school visits.
The stone on the right is a memorial to Eric Birley [1906 to 1995] who had a pivotal role in discovering and preserving Vindolanda.

Glass is another frequent find, ranging from beads and window glass to highly decorated bowls and jars.
The central item in this display is part of a painted bowl, showing Gladiators [I think]
{there is a similar piece in the museum at Coria [Corbridge] which shows the rear half of a leopard / cheetah}.
vin[22] - bones

|
The third evidence / storage room displayed in the museum.
This one is for animal bones ... from cats to cows !
vin[22] - brooches & pins

|
Metal [mainly gold, I think] brooches and clips / pins for fastening clothes such as cloaks.
Some exceptionally detailed decoration on the various brooches.

Horse's chamfron or ceremonial face mask / covering.
The excavated remains, laid flat - it appears that most of the decoration had been removed ...
and above, a modern replica to show what it probably looked like.

vin[22] - Shoes !

The wall of shoes ...
The ground conditions at Vindolanda have preserved a considerable quantity of leather shoes, many normal items of footwear but also including some exceptionally fine sandals and even some suitable for small children.
There are 70 in this display ...

The [old] "Ministry of Works" cast iron sign protecting the Roman Milestone just outside Vindolanda.
This is thought to be in it's original location on route of the Stanegate and would probably have been inscribed with the distance to Coria [Corbridge] and the name of the Emperor when it was erected.

In the gardens outside the museum at Chesterholm - an Ice Plant [Sedum spectabile] but with whiter flowers than the one we've growing at home. Equally attractive to bees and butterflies ...

Looking eastwards, from the vicus to the signal station, across the large area of the fort itself at Vindolanda.
vin[22] - wall recreation [2 of 2]
06 Aug 2022 |
|
Information panel explaining the wall recreations ie "Experimental Archaeology" as a technique for understanding the processes leading to what has been found and is visible today.
For example. Since construction of the turf wall, natural consolidation has reduced the height by approximately two meters. This compaction - requiring compensation & maintenance - will have been one of the factors influencing the decision to rebuild in stone west of Birdoswald.
