On 24th Feb 2022, Russian army units invaded the area around the closed Chernobyl power station, fortunately the sarcophagus was not damaged, although they camped and dug trenches in the "Red Zone" disturbing contaminated material, hence the radiation spike that was detected. When they bugged out [31st March] they kidnapped 169 Ukrainian military personnel as POWs. . Although Ukraine has coal reserves in Donbas, and HEP schemes on the Dnipro River [HEP provides 10% of Ukraine's power] there are four multi-reactor nuclear power stations in the country as a whole. [25% of electricity for Ukraine is generated around Zaporizhzhia - thermal, HEP & nuclear] . . Not my Image : Fair Use & public information.
