Commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by the over 600 members of lifeboat crews that gave their lives trying to save others at sea.
Some of these losses predate the founding of the RNLI [in 1824] the last were the eight crew of the Penlee Lifeboat "Solomon Browne" which capsized whilst going to the aid of the "Union Star" on 19th December 1981.

Sir William Hillary
Who Lived in Douglas and Founded the RNLI in 1824
His courage and that of the Volunteer Crew
Saved many lives * Most Famously the Crew of
St George * Wrecked in Douglas Bay in 1830
In 1832 on the site of the Disaster he built the
Tower of Refuge * Shelter for the Shipwrecked
