The waste from lead mining tends to stay un-vegetated for many years, due to the toxicity.

Another view of the waste tips from an abandoned lead mine, almost at the head of a branch of the Laxey River valley.
This landscape is very similar to the lead mining areas of the Pennines [in England], although a lot of that area used "hushing" to strip overburden away - damming a small stream, then breaking the dam and allowing the floodwaters to strip away the thin soil. This left characteristic steep sided areas with a spread of debris downstream.
