The waste from lead mining tends to stay un-vegetated for many years, due to the toxicity. . Two of the communication masts on Snaefell's summit can be seen to the left of the image.

Another view of the waste tips from an abandoned lead mine, almost at the head of a branch of the Laxey River valley. This landscape is very similar to the lead mining areas of the Pennines [in England], although a lot of that area used "hushing" to strip overburden away - damming a small stream, then breaking the dam and allowing the floodwaters to strip away the thin soil. This left characteristic steep sided areas with a spread of debris downstream.
