Horse's chamfron or ceremonial face mask / covering. The excavated remains, laid flat - it appears that most of the decoration had been removed ... and above, a modern replica to show what it probably looked like. note : A few weeks later, I discovered that in Corbridge (only a few miles away) the museum contains an example of the brass eye cover !

Recreations of the early timber and turf walls and the later stone fortifications. . This is an example of "experimental archaeology" - a technique which I think should be used far more often, as it shows people something which can be more meaningful / understandable than the actual remains.

Information panel explaining the wall recreations ie "Experimental Archaeology" as a technique for understanding the processes leading to what has been found and is visible today. For example. Since construction of the turf wall, natural consolidation has reduced the height by approximately two meters. This compaction - requiring compensation & maintenance - will have been one of the factors influencing the decision to rebuild in stone west of Birdoswald.
