SBB - lower part of Cauldron Snout

17 Oct 2021 28 4 356
Looking down the lower part of Cauldron Snout [Yes, that really is the name of this waterfall / cascade] where the river cuts into part of the Whin Sill [Dolerite]. It is just below Cow Green Reservoir on the Upper River Tees, on the border of Cumbria and Co. Durham, in Northern England. Much of the area is protected as an SSSI. [Site of Special Scientific Interest - geology & flora in particular]. Part of the route for a long distance footpath "The Pennine Way" which follows the river here is just behind me.

SBB - Trilobites

Discovered that this household has three trilobites between them, and one more ammonite after I opened a present yesterday.

SBB - B&W cat

07 Sep 2021 6 6 290
Not only did this cat come for Christmas, he's also turned up on my birthday. Having him here is quite soothing - not that he does much besides sleep and eat. He does, however, have an exceptionally loud purr. He has now decided to sleep on various laps as well as this chair, and has - at last - become confident enough to have accepted hand-feeding with a certain brand of cheese flavoured cat treats.

SBB[21] / rmf - webbed mineral [Explored]

08 Sep 2021 19 10 338
This was found below the normal water line at Cow Green [currently the level is well down] in a pile of similar stones. The substrate is smooth surfaced, but appears crystalline, mainly white and grey with some darker veins and patches. The "webbing" appears to be granular, almost sandy in texture and colour, but as it is much harder and resistant - perhaps by the cement between the grains, it is raised several mm in most places above the substrate. My limited knowledge of geology hasn't yet produced an ID for this specimen. Further research required.

SBB - now where did my cup go ?

07 Oct 2021 1 1 234
I put my cup down somewhere around here while taking some pictures of the remains of what looked like narrow-gauge railway track, on the way back to the car-park from walking along to Cauldron Snout.

SBB - dam at Cow Green

07 Sep 2021 1 187
About as photogenic as the concrete dam at Cow Green Reservoir ever gets. [In my opinion, this is about as ugly as a dam can be, especially given the wild beauty of the moorland setting] The pass valve is set to discharge a minimum flow rate, to maintain the downstream river environment.

SBB - cgr / cs - car park

07 Sep 2021 1 189
Looking from the western end of the car park at the western end of Cow Green Reservoir over a short height dry stone wall - although the cap stones are cemented in place. This is the view as we eat our picnic lunch. Weather is sunny intervals, with a brisk wind. [You can see how low the water level has got, from the exposed foreshore in the middle distance, over the dry(ish) summer we have just had].
