cvd - Northumberland, March 2020 to May 2022

Heatmap of cases by age bands in Northumberland during the covid-19 pandemic, the period covered is March 2020 to May 2022.
Testing during the first wave in 2020 was not wide-spread, and there were many undetected cases. [Something that may be happening again, with the lack of free testing & the new BA.4 & BA.5 Omicron sub-variants becoming prevalent in May 2022].

The growth in New Cases compared for the start of the second wave (Kent variant in Autumn 2020) and the present situation (start of the 'Indian' variant's Third Wave). A good many similarities can be identified but there are also some significant differences in the situations.

cvd / O&S - 'Rona Chaos (pre-Brexit)

The organised chaos at Manton, Kent on 25th December 2020, as a result of France closing her borders, especially because of the 'rona's new "Kent" variant. There are about 5,000 waggons lined up on the main runway there ...
They were cleared "overnight" after drivers were tested for the 'rona ...
For Information - Manton has this wide expanse of tamac & concrete as a result of being a diversionary landing ground for damaged aircraft, returning from bombing raids over Germany in WW2.

These had an effect, but in my opinion were not sufficient to prevent the "new variant" from gaining some level of infections in the community.
The level of household mixing over the winter solstice / new year period will have more than wiped out the gains from that lockdown as can be seen by increased infections / hospitalisations / deaths now being experienced involving the "new Kent variant".
Hopefully, the rapid ramping up of vaccinations in the main high priority groups will take some of the sting out of the tail ...

Comparison of Covid death rates (per 100,000 population) in UK, USA and EU.
I suspect that some under-recording / under-testing occurred during the period March to June 2020.

cvd - mobility facet in UK lockdowns

Where people were going on the first Friday of the three UK Lockdowns ?
The relative looseness of the second lockdown (November 2020) shows clearly, this was followed by a "tiered" structure. The resulting confusions in these new rules, plus the evolution of the "Kent" variant drove the case rate up again to a very high level, with many deaths as a consequence.
However, the third lockdown has greatly reduced UK cases of Covid-19, but much of that will be the result of closing down the education sector.
There is also a reduction in deaths, and the vaccination rollout will be having a role with that.

The number of new cases detected in the UK during December 2020 and 9th Jan 2021.
[25th December is artificially & significantly depressed]
The UK came out of national restrictions back into a tiered structure at the beginning of December, and at least partially because of the detection of a more transmissible new variant [Kent variant], went back into a much stricter national lockdown on 4th January 2021.

cvd - UK tiers, late December 2020
30 Jan 2021 |
|
|
|
As a consequence of spreading in the community of the "new variant" [which probably started in late November / early December - also known as the 'Kent variant'], the UK government altered the tiers [restrictions] with effect from boxing day ie 26th December 2020. It was quickly clear this was insufficient, and national restrictions [similar to the Spring 2020 lockdown] were brought in from 4th January 2021.
