Despite the hole in the trunk, this tree seemed to be bursting into leaf. What caught my eye was the contrasts and shapes.

the power of growing trees - over the past three decades (or more) the tree has gradually split the boulder into two. Getting a decent image of this place is proving difficult, the road is busy and the alignment doesn't help.

A mass of exposed roots; no idea how much soil the tree actually has underneath, there are more roots and rock than soil. Taking this close up image of tree roots generated some puzzled looks from other people.

Give this tree a medal for persistence ...

I already knew that growing tree roots exerted a lot of pressure, enough to split rock - clearly shown here by the splits seen in several places.
