HWH - Grindon Lough [low tide]

08 Aug 2021 4 104
Grindon Lough in mid-July 2021. Lack of recent rain and a high rate of evaporation have considerably shrunk this lough, which has no beck as an exiting waterflow. Compare to a winter view, with a much higher water level. Hadrian's Wall runs along the ridge that forms the horizon, and the photographer has been travelling along the line of the Stanegate, the route of a Roman road that pre-dated Hadrian's Wall.

Grindon Lough - this lake varies in size depending on how much rain has fallen in the past few weeks. This is probably near to the maximum extent, in February 2020. It has no surface outlet, but probably drains out through the ridge of hills to the south [on the right, as this image was taken facing east] The modern road follows the line of the Roman road known as the "Stanegate" along the line, more or less parallel to the top of the same ridge.
