One of the tactics in WW1 was to tunnel under the trenches of opposing forces, pack in a large amount of explosives and detonate them. Both sides did this numerous times, the holes left can be quite large.

Hudswell-Clarke No.1238 of 1916. Built to War Department G class specification. Exported to Ghana, spent 40 years upside down in a river after killing the driver, Repatriated in 2008 and restoration finished in 2014.
