A worrying drop in the decade up to 2010, the recovery from this deficit has been slow and sporadic. In 2020 the planting area was about half what it had been in 1989. This is in a country [UK as a whole] that is almost deforested compared to what it could be. Over their lifespan, trees form an important carbon sink. . A large section of the English contribution to this process has been in Kielder Forest ... although a significant part of that is replanting after harvesting. . .
