CoLC - food inflation [UK] 2020-2024
19 Dec 2024 |
|
Inflation is a strange thing - much of that rise in prices was in early-mid 2022 and was a direct and largely panic response to the ru55ian invasion of Ukraine - but probably due to the hikes in costs as a consequence of sanctions on oil / gas pushing up energy prices.
Additionally; covid-19, bird flu and brexit have all affected food prices in an inflationary manner.

Some interesting things could be impacted if/when tRump activates his threated tariff based warfare against the neighbours [Canada & Mexico] and countries further afield, like China.
But the only people who will really suffer will be Americans from the increased prices.

CoCL - Inflation rates from 2016 to Oct 2024
21 Nov 2024 |
|
The stupidly high UK inflation rates during 2022-2024 were largely as a result of unsustainable increases in energy costs following ru55ia's aggression by invading Ukraine, on top of the upsets to the world economy produced during the cibd-19 pandemic.

That's assuming you can jump through all the hoops imposed during the process of making and maintaining a claim for UC. And there's a lot of them !
[UC rolls up a number of other payments such as Unemployment benefit etc]
.
Pensions are still subject to the "triple lock" so should be getting slightly more.

CoLC - shop prices in August 2024

How prices have varied ...
A general fall to August 2024 has been pushed by non-food prices [white goods ?] being heavily discounted as inflation in other aspects of people's lives constrains their spending- and a fall in food prices from their 2023 peak.

CoLC - public sector wages

That is why the public sector workers are asking for more in their wage packets, what they do get isn't going far enough ...
Most teachers these days can't earn enough to buy a house until later in their careers. Even junior doctors are in the same boat !

The of Interest Rates to control inflation is a very blunt instrument, it appears to work, but with a timelag measured in months ...

CoLC - paying less now [July 2023]
07 Jan 2024 |
|
This appears to be counter-inflationary, but the fuel prices in July 2022 were so very high as a result of ru55ia invading Ukraine and the sanctions consequently applied to ru55ia's oil & gas sales. It took some time for production elsewhere in OPEC to "pick up the slack" plus the artificial scarcity resulted in some "price-gouging" at pumps on the forecourts.

CoLC - UK inflation rises sharply [June 2022]
01 Jun 2022 |
|
The main driver recently has been the rocketing increase in oil/gas prices, coupled with Putin's invasion of Ukraine affecting grain and sunflower seed supplies by preventing exports.
Before that, one of the side-affects of the Covid pandemic was increased prices - with some price-gouging - especially to certain food staples and use of couriers for deliveries, the cost of which was "hidden" inside price increases as people were not shopping around for good deals.

clch / CoLC - energy costs going up & up
28 Aug 2022 |
|
I'm wondering why the UK has such a large increase, especially when Germany was far more dependent on ru55ian gas, and has had to buy in much more expensive alternative supplies.
Might it be something to do with a privatised / profit-driven industry, as well as brexit ???

CoLC - UK inflation [CPI] April 2022
01 Dec 2021 |
|
A significant driver of the current inflation has been the surge in energy prices, especially gas and electricity, with more increases to come with the price cap changes due later in April 2022.
This scenario is not going to help the economically disadvantaged in society make environmentally friendly choices.

clch - uk gas prices, 2016 - 2021 (Sept 2021)

|
In the second half of 2021, there was an almost exponential growth in the UK's gas prices - at a time when the use of fossil fuels was increasingly under scrutiny. Unfortunately, changes in infrastructure are neither quick nor inexpensive.
I use LPG for heating & some cooking ... and have seen a similar rate of price rises.
