wst / whn - waves over Whitehaven
07 Jan 2024 |
|
Huge waves over the pier and lighthouse during a storm [undated, guessing anywhere between 2015 and early 2023 - although the weathered appearance of the lighthouse indicates pre-2022]
I suspect this might be Storm Desmond - 3rd to 8th December 2015 - which was quite vicious / devastating to most of Cumbria, which lost a lot of bridges and a Police Officer was killed when a bridge in Workington collapsed under him, as a result of the excessive rainfall.

Inside the outer harbour, the wind and tide have combined to create a very short wavelength pattern in the incoming sea.

Looking out, past the West Pier lighthouse, to see a couple of yachts standing away and a small trawler heading towards home.

whn - west pier turnout

Just in front of the line of bollards is the site of a turnout (points) to a loop. The main route continues in a straight line - marked by the light grey patches. The loop line runs away from the two removable bollards (the middle pair) parallel with the main line.

The sandstone used to build the West Pier at Whitehaven has a number of interesting inclusions. Quartzite and ironstone, in the main. More or less distinct signs of "current bedding" are visible on some of the stones.

whn - west pier capstan

Capstan (remains) pulley block and mooring bollard on the west pier, Whitehaven. The sets of railing protect sets of steps, some of which are rather worn and require greater care. To the left is the route of the pier railway, showing as the surface has been cut away into a channel for the track alignment.

not too easy to distinguish in this image, but there was a set of points (turnout) here, in the railway that ran along the West Pier. (the diverging route is, very approximately in line with the long shadow, approximately to the level of the bollards)

lighthouse on the tip of the West Pier. There is quite an area of shoals around this pier, which show up during low tide. (Most noticeably at the greater range of the spring tides). Just after this was taken, there was a seriously heavy shower of rain.

Starting in the foreground this line of puddles seem to represent a railway or similar, there is the remains of a capstan just by the railings, back in the distance is what looks like a slipway - but it is for transhipping of animals ie cattle / sheep. The lighthouse at the pier's tip is just out of shot to the right.
