shw[7-22] - extreme heatwave; part 2

06 Aug 2022 1 63
The second period of extreme heat was forecast over the weekend 17-19th July 2022, it produced the first RED warning for temperature and high alerts for medical and transport facilities. Another heatwave in the first half of August is predicted to last longer than this mid-July period [4 days instead of two] but may not reach 40degrees. A continuing problem is the near drought conditions. There have been a lot of "grass" fires, some of which have been escaped BBQs, others have resulted in the distressing loss of family homes. I hope that the idiots who discard lit cigarettes and abandon BBQs actually have a conscience and stop their anti-social behaviour before lives are lost. . not my image ; fair use & public information

clch - UK annual mean temperatures [1890 - 2021]

06 Aug 2022 72
The MetOffice data showing how much the UK's mean temperature has changed in the period 1890 to 2021. There has been significant individual fluctuations from year to year, but a very clear overall, long-term increase, despite the shallow drop between 1950 and 1965. It will be interesting to see how the 2022 summer heatwave affects this ... . . not my image ; fair use & public information

shw - UK max temps [1970 - 2021]

During the summer heatwave in 2022, a lot of comparisons were made with the situation in 1976. Some were in error, and also ignored the affects of global warming. See also the top ten hottest days image ... . . Not my Image ; fair use & public information

Clear evidence of widespread global warming - comparing both June 1976 and June 2022 against the global average between 1951 and 1980. . . not my image ; fair use & public information

shw[7-22] - hottest days, Wales

06 Aug 2022 83
Top ten hottest days in Wales, according to the MetOffice. Unlike in England, three entries are from the 1976 heatwave, with the 18th July 2022 being 1.9C hotter than the second placed event [both in Hawarden, Flintshire]. not my image ; fair use & public information

I don't think you can argue against the idea of global warming when looking at this information. There's a definite warming trend detectable from about 1910 that runs to the modern day [2020], with a period around 1950 that "zig-zag-ed" around the long-term average. What's also visible is that the rate of warming started to increase about 2010 ... Determining & counteracting the causes of this warming before it passes a tipping point has been exercising the minds of scientists and politicians since the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The conclusion was the emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide were a significant factor, and various measures are being introduced to counteract [control] the rise in temperatures. . clch - UK temps timeline, 1880 to 2020

03 Aug 2021 114
Although there has been a lot of variation between the mean temperature for individual years, there has been an overall increase between c1880 and 2020, even with the slight drop in the 1950s. One of the lowest appears to be c1962/3 which I remember as being a particularly hard and long winter. . So, what changed ... In the 1950s, private car ownership began expanding. Home central heating started being installed in new houses, and there was a baby / housing boom. Industry, even the traditional heavy users of coal, began a period of boom - ever increasing production. More nations became industrialised, greater international trade, all of the post WW2 "brave new world" ... . All these changes would have increased carbon dioxide emissions, and other waste materials polluting the atmosphere and the environment on top of, and amplifying the natural process of warming up after a glacial episode. What was, initially referred to as the "Greenhouse affect" then "global warming" and now "climate change emergency". . . . Not my Image : Fair Use & public information
