clch - drought areas

31 Oct 2024 25
More areas are subjected to drought conditions, and for longer. Global warming aka climate change doesn't just mean warmer it can also mean different rainy seasons - or no rain at all - or too much rain ... Failed rains mean failed crops and hence famine ... . The July 2022 image shows a much greater extent of dried [brown] vegetation than the previous year, even in areas that don't [normally] suffer from drought conditions severe enough to justify the imposition of hosepipe bans. . . not my image ; fair use & public information

shw[8-22] - rainfall 1st week August 2022

Map showing the UK rainfall during the first week of August 2022. Very scare in the southern areas, rather more in the areas of Gywnedd & Carlisle. But not enough to say the water storage deficit was covered. It will need a wet winter to refill the reservoirs in south & east England . Not my image ; fair use & public information.

shw[8-22] - flash floods ; infiltration vs runoff

Nice graphic explaining why flash flooding can occur when it rains heavily after a drought. . . As a gardener, I will sometimes lightly water certain areas when it has been hot and dry for a while and rain is forecast. [or I'm planning a proper watering session, I'll hoe & pre-water - just dampen - the surface, so that when I do the proper watering, it is more likely to soak in, rather than flow away over the surface]. . . not my image ; fair use & public information

Low "tide" at Llyn Celyn, as can be seen by the exposed surface of the far bank. The previous few months had been very dry, with almost no rain.
