rsf - old south pier & Meik beacon

18 Feb 2024 29
Following a conversation in another place, I was sent this image, and was given an implied permission for this use, but anonymously. I haven't attempted to correct the colour balance. It is a scanned image of the Meik lighthouse, in it's original location on the "Old South Pier" before it was moved to above Roker beach in 1983. Not my Image ; fair use & public education

rsf[24] - Roker Pier at dusk

Lighthouse on Roker Pier, taken just about sunset. . Completed in 1903, built in alternating layers of red & white Aberdeen granite, to a design by Henry Hay Wake. Still operating. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roker#Roker_Pier_Lighthouse

rsf[24] - tide is coming in

31 Jan 2024 102
The incoming tide means the quite small waves are breaking over the rock armour [shown by the shiny & damp rocks]. Sadly I didn't manage to catch any images showing a decent amount of spray, it's also going dark as the sun set some minutes ago.

rsf[24] - driftwood

31 Jan 2024 110
The high tides & onshore winds have built up the beach significantly, as well as bringing a load of driftwood ashore at Roker, mostly bits of branches washed down the River Wear during recent storms. This lump of tree stood out. I reckon that would make a good place to hang bags and towels.

rsf[24] - picnic table

Remarkably comfortable places to sit & eat, to relax or just watch the sea. Someone - I presume the local council - has been improving the seafront facilities at Roker.

rsf[24] - old lighthouse {1 of 2}

31 Jan 2024 153
The old lighthouse on the high ground above Roker Beach [near Sunderland]. Glowing somewhat in the sunlight, it looks like it has had a recent repaint. . Built in 1856 to a design by Thomas Meik and sited on the Old South Pier at the mouth of the R. Wear. It was moved here in 1983. . That green grass was quite sodden, due to all the recent rain.

rsf[22] - wave splash [1 of 7]

18 Sep 2022 103
After consuming some very good Fish n Chips, down in the carpark on Roker sea front - just beyond the old IRB station [which is now the base for the RNLI beach lifeguards] - we did a bit of wave-watching. It was a little after high tide, when the waves had been depositing some bits of junk, small stones and seaweed, but there were still some good splashes. [1 of 7]

rsf[22] - driftwood

18 Sep 2022 90
Several driftwood tree trunks are incorporated into this area of Roker sea front, as part of the regeneration efforts in the area.

rsf[22] - roots

18 Sep 2022 135
The remains of roots on a stump, from the colour and state of these piece of timber, I am pretty sure that they are all "driftwood" - and some of the trunks probably washed up on the nearby beach ! Part of a planted up stumpery as part of the regeneration scheme.

rsf[22] - entrance

18 Sep 2022 89
The entrance to the River Wear / Sunderland's harbour & shipyards etc is between Roker [North] and the South Pier.
