Small image showing the CPI [Consumer Prices Index] for food & non-alcoholic drinks changes between 2010 and 2024 for both the UK and the post-brexit 27 nations still in the European Union. There's a rise between late 2021 and mid-2023, after which it levels off to about the same rate as in 2016-2019. I suspect there are several causes, mostly as a response to happenings in the rest of the world. I would list i) the covid pandemic ii) brexit - UK's inflation has been less in absolute terms, but has still followed a similar profile iii) climate change induced supply difficulties and iv) Putin's ru55ian led and illegal invasion of Ukraine. The main driver recently has been the rocketing increase in oil/gas prices, coupled with Putin's invasion of Ukraine affecting grain and sunflower seed supplies by preventing exports. Before that, one of the side-affects of the Covid pandemic was increased prices - with some price-gouging - especially to certain food staples and use of couriers for deliveries, the cost of which was "hidden" inside price increases as people were not shopping around for good deals. . A significant driver of the current inflation has been the surge in energy prices, especially gas and electricity, with more increases to come with the price cap changes due later in April 2022.
