Looking down at Crosscanonby beach, the circular walled area - with additional sea defences (which should be extended further to the sides) - is the remains of a salt pan, probably dating back to the Elizabethan period, maybe even earlier.

Beach at Crosscanonby. There is a Roman fortlet up on top of the hill just behind here, also some salt pans a little way to the right at the base of that same hill. A lot of those red pebbles are actually domestic red house-bricks, or fragments of such items.
