This stone work runs behind Whitey Rock. It supports the route of the railway. It would appear, from the staining on the stonework that various industrial by-products were dumped here. The fence is a relatively modern addition.

Looking towards Lowca - between the North Pier lighthouse and Redness Point - the area just above the shoreline was the site (now marked by the two tanks) on which the Fletcher Jennings locomotives were built.

Whitey Rock, the "twin towers and the route of the railway are below the cliffs, with Bransty, now part of Whitehaven, some more of which is visible to the right. The large shed is probably on the site of one of Whitehaven's former coal mines.

This conspicuous feature on the shoreline, underneath Bransty, is "whitey rock" ... This slag bank is almost the only feature remaining to mark the location of the Lonsdale Haematite Ironworks, which ceased production at the very start of the twentieth century, just after Whitehaven's shipyards had closed, greatly reducing demand.
