Small image showing the CPI [Consumer Prices Index] for food & non-alcoholic drinks changes between 2010 and 2024 for both the UK and the post-brexit 27 nations still in the European Union. There's a rise between late 2021 and mid-2023, after which it levels off to about the same rate as in 2016-2019. I suspect there are several causes, mostly as a response to happenings in the rest of the world. I would list i) the covid pandemic ii) brexit - UK's inflation has been less in absolute terms, but has still followed a similar profile iii) climate change induced supply difficulties and iv) Putin's ru55ian led and illegal invasion of Ukraine. Following the pressures on the NHS of the covid pandemic, a rapid rise in longer waiting times has developed, more urgent cases are being dealt with reasonably promptly. However, less urgent matters continue to have increased waiting times, indeed some waits now exceed a year - a time span last seen around 2009. [SPECULATION - Some of this is due to staffing problems, which appear to have been exacerbated by brexit / immigration controls. The other facet may be a largely concealed political desire to re-invent a dominant private practice as per the american insurance based system, where the rich can afford it but other's can't].
