St Cuthbert II tied up at the jetty on Longstone, Farne Islands, whilst the passengers wander about - looking at the lighthouse and wildlife. The crane (jib just visible) was for unloading supplies before the lighthouse was automated.

Leaving Inner Farne behind on the return passage to Seahouses. The white stain on the cliffs was caused by the support systems for the lighthouse - unlike the patchy guano deposits elsewhere. The old light tower on Brownsman Island is visible to the left of the Inner Farne Lighthouse.

gbw - inner farne

Looking at the Inner Farne cliff that faces the mainland. The large white stain was made by waste discharged by the lighthouse, the guano visible in other areas is far more patchy.

Plan showing the Farne Islands - and the differences betweenthe low and high tide water lines. No wonder that there are over 300 shipwrecks around them.

Farne Islands from Seahouses. Left is Inner Farne (lighthouse) in the middle are Staple and Brownsman (tower) and to the right is Longstone (red and white lighthouse). Depending on the state of the tide, there are between 15 and 20 islands in the group.

Longstone Lighthouse - from where Grace Darling and her father set out - in a storm - to row a small, open boat [a local design known as a coble - say it with a long O] to rescue people stranded on Big Harcar Rock who had escaped from the wreck of the PS Forfarshire in 1838. Since 1990 runs on automated systems using solar panels and LEDs as the light source. e2a : for further details - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longstone_Lighthouse

Whilst walking around Longstone Lighthouse, this young seal was spotted having a sunbathe! whilst waiting for the tide to bring the sea back.
