Platform for a postilion / groom / footman to stand on, at the rear of the carriage. The footman would jump down as the carriage rolled to a stop, go to the door, open it and unfold the step, perhaps assisting a lady to alight. The groom would hold the horses' heads.

Carriage probably built in the 1840s and belonging to the Pease family. Frequently travelled in and around Darlington, usually pulled by a pair of horses.
