CoLC - Food / non-alcohol inflation

21 Jul 2024 22
Small image showing the CPI [Consumer Prices Index] for food & non-alcoholic drinks changes between 2010 and 2024 for both the UK and the post-brexit 27 nations still in the European Union. There's a rise between late 2021 and mid-2023, after which it levels off to about the same rate as in 2016-2019. I suspect there are several causes, mostly as a response to happenings in the rest of the world. I would list i) the covid pandemic ii) brexit - UK's inflation has been less in absolute terms, but has still followed a similar profile iii) climate change induced supply difficulties and iv) Putin's ru55ian led and illegal invasion of Ukraine. These have had differing levels of influence over this post 2019 period. . Not my Image : fair use &b public education

Some of this peak was due to weather events - some of which were probably related to climate change - but, to me at least, the more significant factor was uncertainty generated by ru55ia's aggression and invasion of Ukraine [such as the export blockade and outright theft of grain and other items] and the economic sanctions that followed. .
