CAS[w] - turret in 1941

18 Nov 2023 25
The air-gunnery training range - most likely tis is either Penrhos or Porth Neigwl - in 1941. That looks like a Boulton Paul gun turret on the road trailer. The aircraft silhouette is on a narrow-gauge flat waggon, which is rope hauled. This mobility gives the trainee gunner practice in deflection - the art of shooting where the target is going to be when the bullets arrive. [Not always easy, especially when you are moving as well, and not in straight & level flight]. . not my image ; fair use & public education

A pair of C-130 aircraft dropping paras, presumably on a training exercise [probably over Salisbury Plain] ... I never saw this personally, but I probably saw the flights for this type of exercise leaving RAF Lyneham when I was a teenager. . Not my Image ; fair use & public education

MoW - MIC documents

13 Oct 2024 29
These booklets were products of the MIC ["Mutual Improvement Classes"] that almost all railway companies encouraged their staff to operate. MICs are a means to train the upcoming / new staff in the details of their jobs. Especially important with tasks that didn't occur every day, or even every month - such as running trains with pilotmen ...

sam - Percival Sea Prince [1 of 2]

Percival Sea Prince - the T mk.1 was modified to become the Royal Navy's "flying classroom" for three radar and wireless trainees. WP314 was built in 1952 and spent much of it's working life with 750 Squadron, replaced by the Jetstream in 1978. Acquired by SAM in 1994, from a breaker's yard. It felt quite cramped in the "classroom", even without all the equipment. Carries the 1970s red white & grey colour scheme ... www.rafmuseum.org.uk/research/online-exhibitions/taking-flight/training-aircraft-colour-schemes

WHN - lifeboat training

10 Mar 2021 28 13 292
Most of the crew from Workington's lifeboats are in and around Whitehaven Marina this morning, accompanied by boats from their flank stations. A mixture of training exercise and displays for anyone who wants to watch. Currently, how to get into an inflated liferaft and pull it across the harbour. A serious exercise, but accompanied by a certain amount of good humour. All this activity was followed by a special, seasonal, meal for the crews ...
