So very pleased to catch our spikey visitor, as s/he was the main reason for the deployment of the camera trap.
Only taken five nights ...

Somewhat substantial hedgepig between food dishes.
Certainly big enough to hibernate !
[This looks very like the one we found to be visiting the "coal shed" just after dark on the 7th Sept]

I do hope that the previous visitors have left something for the resident hedgepig - s/he's very late, it will be getting light soon.
[The next batch of hedgepig food will be "undercover" ...]
oaw[HH] - hello ! [explored]

Chunky hedgepig found at home - I think the wind shut the door behind her/him, as we found him in the outhouse. There had been food in the outhouse already and s/he was waiting to be let out !
methinks this is our regular visitor as s/he seemed not overly scared of us - more annoyed at being shut in for a few hours. Ate some more food and skedaddled sharpish !

Our 2022 hedgepig unrolling and heading towards another meal [meat pet food, dried mealworms and hedgepig pellets plus clean water] or a late night - for him - snack.

Found in the wild part of the garden and promptly curled up into the standard protective ball, so we could pick him up for a quick check-over. He seemed to be in fine fettle.
You definitely need leather gloves, those spines are quite pointy ...
For some months we've been finding hedgehog scat and the food dishes have been well cleaned out.
hedgepigs - the end

No words, but even Ben de-Dog was upset at the passing of the old fella.
(This is the one which had an enormous cyst on his lower back - which burst one night last autumn but healed up completely and he spent the winter / spring indoors).

Well it was to us, more like breakfast to him. Much munching in progress.
No sign left of that cyst - it was just a bit further down his back from that tiny bit of straw stuck there.

This elderly boar spent the winter indoors as he had an injury to his rump that needed time to heal. He's fine now.

After snacks - dried mealworms (an early breakfast to us, but late supper for her!) off to bed, and snoring in short order.

We've been looking after another young hedgehog - but one with nest building skills. This is straw, hay and newspaper strips twisted together.

Ben has been curious about the latest hedgehog living in our large biodome, Harri(ette) was cautious but did unroll enough to say hello.

oaw[HH] - hedgepig ; rescued late 2008

Still very nervous hedgepig just after rescue - found straying in daylight a few weeks before. Successfully put on more weight and then released into a suitable area some weeks later.

This little hedgepig was picked up in daylight - in early September - from the middle of a nearby road, (already she has been treated for insect pests!) She is standing on a standard laptop keyboard for scale. She is too small and underweight to survive the winter (and it was -13.5C at times), so she was taken into care ... she spent the following spring and summer slug hunting in the garden, and successfully hibernated that next winter.

This is our first long term rescue. Originally (?) named, we collected him one evening from a nearby road. We took him in as he was unable to walk in a straight line and he seemed a little underweight. We think he had been hurt some time before as the vet thought he was somewhat deaf in one ear.

After quite a bit of feeding up, and anti-flea/tick treatment, Prickles became quite an explorer. As you can see from the flat spines, he is totally at home! We concluded that he had had a head injury as we think he was deaf in one ear and his eyesight wasn't the best.
However, he was adept at clearing slugs from the vegetable patch over the next couple of summers.
