NSR23 - roof planks
03 Mar 2020 |
|
The space due to be occupied later next month has proved very useful to spread out the roof planks during the early painting and fitting stages.
NSR Hist - miners train to chatterley

Workmen travelled using these older carriages, as they were "cascaded" from mainline onto more secondary and then local services, eventually ending their days in "paddy trains". Some would then be scrapped but others would receive a coat of green paint before being sold off as holiday chalets, store sheds and the like.
One suggestion is that this image was taken on the Cheddleton Hospital Branch.
The carriage on the extreme left is a passenger brake, of the type the Knotty Coach Trust were planning to replicate, until the remains at Rudyard Lake were identified.
Not my image; and with a date about 1900, out of copyright.
NSR23 - brake testing

Gently shunting "23" around at Blythe Bridge, partly for brake and clearance tests.
(the double "luggage" doors will be re-hung in a day or two).
NSR23 - interior planks & external panels
30 Dec 2020 |
|
Dry fitting the softwood planks that make up the interior at the outer end of the passenger section. Once removed these will be filled, knotted and primed, with the final finish will be medium oak scumble, protected by non-yellowing varnish.
Progress is being made on fitting the exterior panelling (primed and grain-filled).
NSR23 - handrail test
30 Dec 2020 |
|
Holding up one of the long handrails, to test the fit, which needed quite some strength from that angle. Not that you can see who it is, but that's our apprentice, Connor. Our blacksmith was working from a combination of our dimensions and drawings, plus some very grainy old images (and one good one).
NSR23 - timber remains delivery

Transported in the back of a large van, the excavated "Rudyard" remains are delivered to Stanegate Restorations for safe storage.
NSR23 (ABC) - underframe
14 Dec 2017 |
|
This is the ex-LMS 20T brake van that has been donated to the KCT. The bodywork (what's left of it !) will be stripped off and after some minor modifications will become the chassis for the Knotty Heritage Train's ABC (Accessible Brake Coach).
NSR23 - interior at Rudyard Lake
14 Dec 2017 |
|
Interior of the guard's section in-situ at Rudyard Lake. Note that the interior panelling changes from horizontal to vertical at the bottom of the end windows. (This was a late stage repair during time as a chalet, my initial impression made me suggest that this was to limit the cost of repairs to damaged planking as this area was immediately adjacent to the guard's door, and the teak "corner" section is somewhat worn away, especially on the lower section).

NSR23 - ducket on display April 2016

The Warley show "Ducket Display" under the canopy at Blythe Bridge, hopefully it will help raise funds for the ABC project - certainly raised awareness, plenty of "when will the rest arrive ?" remarks.
.
Removed from Caversall Road in Dec 2017 : came up to Haltwhistle, to join the rest of the under construction NSR23.

(originally the luggage / parcels area of the guard's compartment)
In practice, the door was built to slide within the partition, to avoid blocking in one passenger and to save space,
