Voting [last year ie November 2024] based on the price of eggs - with an Avian Flu pandemic predicted for in the near future - will have a few hidden costs. And the promise to bring the cost down, of eggs & other things, will have been a lie.

Pretty sure these are blackbird eggs. MrsB just flew off for a comfort break, that's how I knew where she was ! and so I'm confident that I hadn't disturbed her sitting. I didn't go near the nest again, so no idea how well they faired - we still have several juveniles floating about ...

Unfortunately, this nest and the two eggs have been abandoned, possibly, may have been wood pigeons ? [Taken with zoom from a fair distance away, after several days checking - from a concealed position - whether the birds concerned had left the nest site : because I never saw them over that period, I'm guessing that it was pigeons].

Nematus ribesii larvae and eggs examined under a lens. The caterpillars are munching a gooseberry leaf, with the ability to chew back to the ribs in a very short time.

This mass of stringy jelly is actually an egg mass from the common squid, Alloteuthis subulata. It was returned to the deeper water.
