phw - silbury hill

I'm old enough to have been able to climb to the top off this ancient monument, which isn't allowed these days, for various safety reasons. Scan of a friend's image of Silbury Hill, posted with permission

Looking from the fenced enclosure across at Arbor Low [the Bronze Age round barrow is just nicking the horizon] from the height of the Gib Hill barrows, a little over 350 yards away, in line with the stile.

ppd[22] - Gib Hill barrow[s]

Actually, Gib Hill is made up of two barrows, a Neolithic oval barrow with an early Bronze Age barrow superimposed at one end. I think that the site was already one of the highest points in the area, before the barrows were built.

ppd[22] - henge ditch

28 Aug 2022 76
Digging the ditch and bank of this henge must have been difficult, as I think the soil is only shallow. [which may be one of the reasons why the stones are recumbent features].

ppd[22] - Arbor Low stones

The stone circle at Arbor Low, surrounded by a ditch and bank. The limestone slabs are laid [mostly] flat and some are broken. All show deep marks from weathering. There is some debate whether the stones were ever vertical. The figure is standing at one end of the central feature [The "Cove"], Image captured from the later Bronze Age round barrow that was constructed at the eastern edge of the henge.
