The Lovell radio telescope, parts of the mechanism of this wonderful piece of engineering are two recycled warship gun turrets. Celebrated 50th birthday in 2007. This picked up the Sputnik booster rocket by Radar in 1957, and the fax images from Luna 9 signals in 1966. Current work is in radio-astronomy ; observations of pulsars etc.
