The cannon is "Big Tom" and dates from the John Paul Jones raid era of Whitehaven's history. It was originally sited much nearer sea level. What I didn't really see when I was framing this image was the detail on the rock formation, but the "rock face" sort of jumped out at me afterwards. An example of pareidolia.

Nearly high tide. I remember visiting here in the late 1970s, but at low tide. I had a good plodge in some of the rock pools, looking at the bedding / strata. One thing that really stuck in my mind was the oily sheen to the water, I can also recall a "nodding donkey" oil wellhead - it was on the far side of the bay, well to the left of the white structure in the centre of this image [see NOTE]. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimmeridge_Oil_Field

Very clever manipulation and the idea is very good, too. I was sent a link to this image just after I had been looking at lava flows on a webcam ... Not my image ; fair use & entertainment
