hst - distant pier

30 Jun 2023 1 97
Looking westwards along the Prom to the distant pier, over the beach "gravel & shells" and a lonely picnic table, there's a few more behind me, and a large car park to the right. It's at the end of a sunny & hot Sunday afternoon, and people are finally coming off the beach and heading home - or for food and a drink. There was a complementary supply of bottled water in the car park, which seemed to have been both a good idea and very popular - hopefully stopped some heat related health incidents..

hst - eateries, just behind the beach

Ice-creams & snacks etc available here, with a zig-zag-bench to sit on ... (the other one still had a number people sitting on it, who were enjoying snacks and a cuppa}

Although closed for the day, this funicular is operational, the route is largely in a tunnel. Electrically powered, it was originally operated by a gas engine. Refurbished for the centenary in 1991. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Hill_Cliff_Railway

hst - The Stade

A couple of the "net huts" on the Stade are fashioned from parts of old boats ... {On Lindisfarne, old boats serve a similar function - and some have been used as dwellings}

hst - bottom of East Hill

Approaching the bottom station of the East Hill cliff railway from across the end of the Stade. The notices on the gate indicate that the funicular is currently [end of June 2023] closed for refurbished. What that entails, and for how long, wasn't clear. [when I find out, I'll edit].

hst - East Cliff funicular

Looking up from the Stade at the Upper Station for the East Hill Cliff funicular. Now electrified it was originally a water balance, and the two towers have water tanks as part of that system. I discovered that this is "closed for refurbishment" - late June 2023 - the notices gave no indication for how long this would be, or what was involved in this process. Will edit when I find out.

Hastings Lifeboat Station, hiding under scaffolding during rebuilding works [2023] to accommodate the new Shannon class lifeboat.

hst - net sheds

On the stade [east end of Hastings] are these tall sheds. Used for making, mending and drying fishing nets, apparently. Hastings has the largest beach launched fishing fleet in the UK To me, they look more like smokeries - for turning herring into kippers.

Wasn't quick enough with the camera to catch the single line token exchange ... [maybe a little on the small side at 10 1/4" gauge]. Didn't get time for a ride - along the front - as it was right at the operating day. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hastings_Miniature_Railway note : East Hill funicular in the background.
