HWH - Cawfields Quarry loco "The Varney"

01 Oct 2023 5 2 204
Cawfields Quarry loco at Town Foot, about where Potts Plant Hire is now [date of image - not known] The CQR was laid in 1905, and had several steam and IC locomotives. . The loco was built in 1902 by Kerr Stuart for work on the construction of the dam at Lake Vyrnwy in Wales, and is named after the reservoir. ["Sidar" class, 0-4-0 T, works no 748 of 1902] {only problem with that date is Lake Vyrnwy was built in the 1880s} Apparently the local name for her was "The Varney" ... suspected scrapped in the 1930s after developing problems with her firebox. There is a very similar loco "Diana" at Threkeld Mining Museum in the Lake District. Not my Image : fair use & public information

Almost all the full size steamers are now in the arena, ranging from a Robey "Tandem" roller [the red one on the extreme right] to various Fowlers and Showman's, plus a Sentinel S4 steam waggon. The last ones to enter were the matched pair of Fowler ploughing engines, currently just leaving their base on steam line.

GGF - Riverside from Newcastle

03 Aug 2021 22
Pretty sure that this was taken during the later stages of the construction phase, well before May 1990. I'm looking across the R.Tyne, from near the eastern end of what is now Newcastle Business Park. The structure of the extreme right is "Dunston Staithes" - the means of loading coal onto ships for export. It was restored for the festival, and it's centenary ! [Very unfortunately, parts of it have been cremated by idiotic vandals, on more than one occasion, and it is now badly damaged]
