SBB[24]/VoR{21/34} - dead trees
05 Sep 2024 |
|
There's a lot of dead trees around this area. Mostly Ash and Larch, which have suffered from various fungal diseases, in some areas the landowners have been able to follow the directives to fell the afflicted trees. Sadly, some areas are sufficiently less accessible or too large for the felling to beat the death of the trees.
Whatever happens, the landscape will look very different.

Seedling tree just opening the new season's leaves.
I think it is an Ash [if it is still there at my next visit, in a month or two, I can check - yes, it is an Ash - not growing in a good place so will get removed at some point]
IoM[1] - Fenella

This sculpture shows Fenella, a character from the 1823 novel by Sir Walter Scott’s "Peveril of the Peak". The artist was Nick Barlow, and he carved it from a single piece of Ash. [dated 2011]
It is sited at the landward end of the causeway, overlooking the eponymous beach.

Bare branches reaching into space - these are mostly Ash, and some are due to be pruned for safety reasons during the winter.

The high tide has brought Ben de-Dog another branch - a snapped off branch from an ash tree.
For the past few visits he has been collecting sticks !
The departing waves stranded that branch in such a way as to partially block the access steps down to the beach.
oaw - snail

Why this small snail had climbed up this tiny ash tree is a mystery, but it was over 6ft (c 2m) above ground.
