All loaded up and just finished turning around to head for the gates and the long road home ...
MRT - New wooden roof sticks

Laminated for extra strength and to match the required profile. These will be machined to shape and then test fitted to their metal counterpart. After painting, they will be fixed in position and the roof materials added.
MRT - Palvan in the display hall.

The PalVan in the display hall, not long after returning from Haltwhistle in January 2020.
In a few more days, the lettering will be painted.
MRT - New panelling

It is raining very heavily over the now structurally complete PalVan. The remaining tasks are sorting out a few small discrepancies, change some bolts around and do a little more painting. But after it stops raining.
MRT - refurbished floor plate
02 Oct 2020 |
|
|
We discovered that wooden floor planks between the two sets of steel floor plates (ie - a steel wood steel sandwich) were mostly rotten. As part of the renewals, the three floor plates were de-rusted and painted with red-oxide.

MRT - PalVan leaving for Stanegate Restorations
02 Oct 2020 |
|
|
One slightly crisped PalVan leaving Moor Road, Leeds by low-loader for Haltwhistle to be repaired by Stanegate Restorations.
The bogies [can be seen fore and aft of the PalVan] are from a totally un-related project, but are also coming for delivery to our workshops.
MRT[20] - rebuilding the Palvan [Explored]

Dry fitting the new panelling, inside the already painted metal framework. The sections visible are for the ends, and will be bolted into place on sealant to keep the rain out of the corners.
This was not as easy as it looks. At some point in the past, this PalVan has had al least a couple of decent prangs, since nothing was quite as square as it should be.

Closer view of the roof, steel cant rail and composite roof sticks. The extent of the fire damage is quite clear.

Closer look at the lower section of the end, adjacent to the missing side section. The large piece a few inches up from the floor was probably to prevent the forklifts / pallet trucks used to load the PalVan from penetrating the panelling. Additionally, in this corner, some the timber middle of the composite floor was burnt away.

Closer look at the area under one of the vents, showing that the fire penetrated the exterior plywood skin.

Looking at the doors opposite to the worst side. Some areas of severe damage, especially the roof. (The fabric hanging down is glass fibre matting, used as waterproof roof covering)

A closer view of the most damaged area - a whole section of the side has gone, and the end is also in a poor state.
MRT - PV - inspection 7

|
The most severely damaged section (apart from the roof) the exterior plywood, the structural framework and the inner plywood skin have all been burnt. This area of the PalVan was the nearest point to the builder's merchant which was the victim of an arson attack.

The pair of doors with slightly more damage.
The metal channel at the extreme left appears to have been for a partition to divide the PalVan's internal volume into two sections.

Detail of the less damaged side. There are the remains of a layer of shelving framework attached to this area.

Internal view - door to left, end and side - showing extensive fire damage.
MRT - PV - inspection 3

The paint has been burnt off the ventilation hood and the fire was starting to burn away the end panelling just under the vent.
see note - distorted fence !
