The winter storms in 2015/16 have eroded a significant part of the foreshore here, exposing the retaining wall which supports the railway. The removed material appears to demolition rubble from industrial facilities, plus waste from a colliery and ironworking slag.

This conspicuous feature on the shoreline, underneath Bransty, is "whitey rock" ... This slag bank is almost the only feature remaining to mark the location of the Lonsdale Haematite Ironworks, which ceased production at the very start of the twentieth century, just after Whitehaven's shipyards had closed, greatly reducing demand.
