Roman Cumbria - aerial view

16 Feb 2017 3 2 319
Hardnott Fort from the air. The visible remains are the perimeter wall, corner turrets and gates. The internal buildings are, from the top - granaries, headquarters (principia) and part of the commandant's quarters. The exterior building is the bathouse and just to the east is the route of the modern road for Hardnott Pass and over to Wrynose Pass. (EH - 2015)

Hardknott - Bathhouse

07 Jan 2017 1 204
The obligatory Bathhouse for the fort, this one includes a rare circular sudatorium. As is normal the bathhouse is situated outside the fort, and was probably patronised by the inhabitants of the vicus.

Hardknott - south corner turret

The fort's four corners contain turrets.

Hardknott - Eskdale to the west.

07 Jan 2017 2 2 291
Looking down the valley to the west of the fort, the misty / wet weather is spoiling the view of the River Esk and Eskdale.

Hardknott - via principia from the rear

07 Jan 2017 3 275
Looking down from the highest point in the fort. The far side of these three buildings faced the via principia. L-R Granaries, Principia (headquarters) and Comandant's Quarters/House/villa. . Shortly after I captured this image, Ben arrived at my feet - he was sent to find me, and started off from inside the Commandant's Villa ...

Hardknott- granaries

07 Jan 2017 1 247
Just inside the SE gate, and up to the right are theses granaries - stone built with substantial buttressing. Steps up to the level of the raised floor.

Hardknott - East ditch

07 Jan 2017 1 223
Creating that ditch must have been a lot of hard work ... The stone here is tough stuff.

Hardknott - South East gate

07 Jan 2017 2 1 238
This leads onto the Via Principia ... granaries are just up to the right.

Hardknott - south corner

07 Jan 2017 2 238
The southern corner of Hardknott Fort. About the bottom nine courses of stones are original, there is a slate layer to mark off the later modern ie Victorian reconstruction. The stones in the foreground are the collapsed upper courses, the remains were piled up, clear of the wall.

Hardknott - info panel drawing

According to research, for most of the time the garrison here was a detachment of 500 cavalry of the 6th Cohort of Dalmatians, from the coastal area of present day Croatia.

Hardknott - sitemap

07 Jan 2017 238
This weather for this visit was very dull and overcast as well as rather wet ... which made photographing this info very difficult. This out of focus shot was the only one without obscuring reflections. Next visit, another attempt ...
