The NER BoBo headstock with all the metalwork re-attached, but not yet fully re-painted.

NRM BoBo - buffer droop

The splits in the 'A' end headstock have allowed this buffer to droop.

This is the split in one end of the 'A' end headstock.

NRM BoBo - traditional 3/4 view

30 Mar 2011 1 434
The traditional three-quarter view. I have a liking for this locomotive, it has a powerful look about it, even at rest in a museum. The central cab / footplate seems huge, as I am more used to narrow gauge rolling stock. Taken before the headstocks were replaced.

NRM BoBo - new headstocks

To produce a buffer beam that will remain stable under the conditions inside the main building at Locomotion, we laminated sections of a stable hardwood. Here the blanks are clamped whilst the glue hardens.

NRM BoBo - B end split

30 Mar 2011 327
This is the 'B' end. There are significant splits at this end as well.

NRM BoBo - glueing up

This is the underside of one of the replacement headstocks, with what might be described as artistic anti-gravity glue!

NRM BoBo - marking out

Just making sure that the clearance holes are in the right place ...

NRM BoBo - getting the point

30 Mar 2011 347
Setting up to drill some of the holes used to bolt this to the locomotive. You do not want to see the length of the bit required to go the other way!

NRM BoBo - know the drill

30 Mar 2011 337
Work in progress. Each buffer beam had 20 holes front to back and four running top to bottom.

This is just some of the metalwork that needs to be re-attached.

NRM BoBo - B End Back

30 Mar 2011 343
You did want them in aluminum? (Actually a metallised primer) This is the rear view of the B end headstock, there are some clearance sections as well as the bolt holes.

NRM BoBo - A End Front

The nearer headstock is the one for the A-end (front view)

NRM BoBo - Old A-End

30 Mar 2011 362
We were lent the original headstocks as patterns, mainly for the bolt holes ... This is the rear of the old A-end, the splits are clearly visible ...

NRM BoBo - Old B-End

30 Mar 2011 365
The front view of the original B-end. Some of the splits joined up to release a section. (the rods are improvised handles ... old and dried out they may be, but they still weighed a lot!)

NRM BoBo - loaded up

30 Mar 2011 329
Both pairs of headstocks, loaded up for the trip down to Shildon. The other item is the replacement footplate for the "Sans Pareil" replica.

NRM BoBo - Headstock on

Headstock now in position, time to put on a lot of metalwork, and do up a lot of nuts.
