pcc - almost down

28 Aug 2022 74
Almost all the way back down into Castleton, turn right into the opening where the young person is appearing. Note; the repaired gate ... Made me smile to myself. It is nice to see such environmentally friendly things happening, instead of the more expensive wholesale replacement that so often occurs.

pcc - corner

Turning the corner - looking back - onto the start of the path up to the Castle. I suspect that corner stone in the wall was originally up on the keep, in a similar corner position.

pcc - gateway

28 Aug 2022 76
The sad remains of the gateway arch over the East Gate to the bailey. There are just a few of the shaped stones left in situ.

pcc - hut

28 Aug 2022 68
Small hut, located just inside the East gate archway. I suspect that this may have been the original English Heritage ticket office / small shop, however, these days I think the groundworks team may keep their tools locked away.

pcc - North east corner

28 Aug 2022 70
North east corner of the bailey, the East gate archway is just to the right, and the remains of what may be a turret are to the left.. The tilted stones, in a distinctive herringbone pattern, are from the 11th century, the earliest building phase. The view belies the steepness of the hill on which Peveril Castel is perched. You can't see anything of Castleton in the valley below.

pcc - Hope Valley

28 Aug 2022 79
Taken from the site of the Old Hall, just outside the keep, looking North East [towards the Hope Valley] Castleton is visible over the remains of the North curtain wall. The hill continues down to Castleton, at a similar angle to that visible in the bailey.

Looking northwards from near the Keep, across the bailey. Castleton, in the valley below, is visible to the right.

pcc - Mam Tor

Looking NW, from the Old Hall site [by the Keep]. Mam Tor - what looks like a quarry face is actually the back face of the land-slip. It has been moving - and is still doing so - for some 4,000 years. It extends a considerable distance [see notes]

pcc - bench [HBM]

One of several benches at Peveril Castle, this one is on the site of the Old Hall. Very welcome after the climb up to the castle and within the bailey, and the view to the north is spectacular.

pcc - Keep from the SE

28 Aug 2022 4 3 101
South East face of the late 12th century Keep. The modern spiral staircase leads to the original main entrance. The extent of the remaining ashlar stonework allows an appreciation of the monumental nature of the structure. Part of the reason was the area to the left has not been so severely robbed of the ashlar stonework is that the peak cavern gorge is below and, therefore, access is much more difficult. Not to mention that the main garderobe from the keep discharges in that area.

pcc - Cave Dale

Visible from the West Gate, is Cave Dale, a valley to the south of Peveril Castle. It contains part of a circular walk from which one can appreciate the ruins within the landscape.

pcc - west gate

28 Aug 2022 4 2 93
This is the West Gate, it gave access to the wooden bridge over the Peak Cavern Gorge. This lead to the outer [west] bailey, which contained stables and service buildings and was accessible by carts. The valley almost hidden behind the tree trunk is Cave Dale.

pcc - litter

28 Aug 2022 1 129
Sad to see some litter ... at the base of the keep / west curtain wall [This is thought to be a modern - 19th century - rebuild, as the stones are not laid in the way they would have been in the 11th or 12th centuries]. One of the grounds staff was litter-picking and I added this to his "recyclable" bag.

pcc - northwest face of the Keep

28 Aug 2022 72
A few remaining Ashlar blocks show how the keep would have looked, before the stone was robbed away.

pcc - latrine info panel

Info panel on the western curtain wall, describing the medieval latrine [garderobe] located just to the right.

pcc - garderobe

This niche is a medieval garderobe or latrine, the modern grating covers a long drop into the dry moat to the west of the castle.
