whn - old YWCA

28 Jul 2024 1 1 52
What used to be the YWCA "hostel" in Whitehaven was rebuilt into flats, a few years ago. They should be quite nice ones as they overlook the harbour, at least some of them are now inhabited ! . This looks like the original entrance / "porter's lodge" ... basically, only the gable ends remain of the original building and the footprint of the new section is larger. www.whitehavennews.co.uk/news/17127267.flats-plan-for-towns-former-ywca-buildings

twb[23] - Flats from 1939

This block of flats were built 1935 to 1939, as a memorial to the local businessman & philanthropist Sir James Knott. [designed by Tasker & Child, with "best practice" features that included fire-resistant materials and sturdy cellars that could be turned into bomb shelters]. co-curate.ncl.ac.uk/knotts-memorial-flats The views of events like the "Parade of Sail" for the Tall Ships and arrivals / departures like that of the Bonga in 2002 & 2003 are spectacular. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/3204858.stm
