IBB[25] - backing off

08 Mar 2025 7
Looking over MY Raven's bow as she backs away from the pier at Pooley Bridge. The winter storms over the past decade or so have not been kind to the pier, nor the booking office. I gather that there will be some work done this year.

whn - piers & a spring tide

That's a remarkably high tide [8.3m] at Whitehaven, and just starting to ebb. [snapped by the root of North Pier]

The small "lighthouse" at the seaward end of Amble's harbour piers. Safety fencing along the top - at low tide here, there is quite a drop

SBB[24]/coast{8/8} - Ystwth entrance [HFF]

05 Sep 2024 8 8 79
The dog's leg entrance to Aberystwyth Harbour - partly the estuary of the Afon Ystwyth, but has been much modified by the piers and breakwaters. In the 1990s a small [160 berth] marina has been developed here, behind and to the left. The moorings are a mixture of pontoon and drying / mud berths with a few against wharfs.

lfp - Bournemouth Pier [HFF]

21 May 2024 7 10 90
The helter-skelter on the end of Bournemouth Pier makes something of a navigational landmark - there is quite a large "funfair" at the pier end. Taken from Dursley Chine - where we ate an interesting evening meal. The fences in the foreground delineate the terraces of the eatery ... it was a lot quieter outside.

lfp - Boscombe Pier

My initial impression was that this pier was concrete ... and it has lost the pier end building I remember. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boscombe#Boscombe_Pier Very disappointed that the eatery we had planned on visiting wasn't really suitable, so we went along to Dursley Chine.

rsf[24] - driftwood

31 Jan 2024 109
The high tides & onshore winds have built up the beach significantly, as well as bringing a load of driftwood ashore at Roker, mostly bits of branches washed down the River Wear during recent storms. This lump of tree stood out. I reckon that would make a good place to hang bags and towels.

hst - distant pier

30 Jun 2023 1 95
Looking westwards along the Prom to the distant pier, over the beach "gravel & shells" and a lonely picnic table, there's a few more behind me, and a large car park to the right. It's at the end of a sunny & hot Sunday afternoon, and people are finally coming off the beach and heading home - or for food and a drink. There was a complementary supply of bottled water in the car park, which seemed to have been both a good idea and very popular - hopefully stopped some heat related health incidents..

bcd - pier lighthouse

Zoomed in to show the pier-end lighthouse at Blyth. {I'll have to look at my "North Sea Pilot" to tell me about the flashes, which identify which lighthouse you can see}

PQR - Titan crane north breakwater

19 Dec 2018 9 1 770
The Titan block-setting crane on the North Breakwater at Peterhead, which was constructed between 1912 and 1956. Following the experiences on the South Breakwater, this crane was built with equal height legs from the start. The builder was probably Stothert & Pitt of Bath, but the oval maker's plate is illegible.

aav / wst d - pier flow

Flow dynamics around on of the "Alston Arches" piers, the narrower stone courses are about 2ft (60cm) high, the wider ones are about 3ft.
