MER[23] - Motor No.34

30 Aug 2023 1 1 94
No.7 pronounced No.34 aka "Maria" - has an interesting history. Built in 1994 as a replica of the 1895 works car [No.7] for the 3' 6" gauge Snaefell Mountain Railway, intended as a historical attraction during the SMR's centenary celebrations, it saw limited use and was stored in 1998. The MER had been searching for a works car [to replace Car 27?] for some time, so it was agreed to take over No.7 - Maria was moved to Derby Castle in 2003, for rebuilding, including re-gauging to 3ft, re-numbering and installing the diesel generator to enable independent operation. It is now painted in the departmental high-visibility yellow and red livery. It is unlikely to ever return to its original line, but holds the distinction of having worked on all four of the government-owned rail- and tram-ways. [ie It worked over the Steam Railway on some short-hop journeys in 2010. In 2019 it was seconded to the Horse Tramway to assist in that line's rebuilding ...] {details extracted from ... manxelectricrailway.co.uk/loco-no-34-1995 I saw her in the Derby Castle MER Depot in August 2023. Sadly, she wasn't in use ...

MER[23] - control panel

13 Aug 2023 1 1 84
The old switchgear and control panel at the Laxey sub-station for the MER. These are often built onto slate panels, but the insulating material on this example is marble. PS; Although it is good to see that the panel has been looked after, whoever cleaned that really should have had some "masks" made to protect the marble from staining. [A bit like the mask I've used to protect boiler cladding on a steam locomotive].

MER[23] - MER Locomotive No.23 {4 of 4}

13 Aug 2023 93
One of MER 23's cab roof mounted nameplates. MER Locomotive No.23 was originally built in 1900 by the "Isle of Man Tramways & Electric Power Co.Ltd.", and subsequently rebuilt with waggon bodies. It was restored in 1983, named "Dr R.Preston Hendry" in 1993 but withdrawn in 1994 and stored, initially off-site [it was in Laxey Shed in August 2023]. It currently carries names plates on the cab roof, and is painted in the freight grey & green livery of the IoMT&EPCo. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manx_Electric_Locomotive_23

MER[23] - goods motor No.26 {4 of 4}

13 Aug 2023 2 71
Driver's gate giving access to the platform [sole survivor of the original pattern] This is the sole survivor of a batch of 4 built in 1895 by Milnes [visually very similar to vehicles built at the same time as passenger cars for the MER & SMR] numbered as Cars 10 to 13. They were not a success as they were unglazed and open-sided. They were converted to goods use - as cattle cars ? - and painted all-over freight grey and numbered with the freight stock. This vehicle was in the small museum in Ramsey Plaza for some years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manx_Electric_Cars_10-13 This vehicle was in the small museum at Ramsey Plaza for some years, it is now [I believe] privately owned. Repainted for an appearance in the transport festival [July 2023] and now in storage at Laxey.

MER[23] - Closed van No.16

13 Aug 2023 1 90
Closed van MER No.16, would be used for general goods - the mails would [usually] have been carried in similar vans with a red livery. I believe this was repainted recently, and also appeared in the Transport Festival held at the end of July 2023. Apart from the coupling, these outside framed vans look almost identical to the Steam Railway's "G class" closed vans. note 1 : I think this is privately owned, currently in store at Laxey. note 2 : goods - non-passenger - vehicles have a separate list of numbers.

MER[23] - trailer bogies

Not spares, these are about to go away for refurbishment.

MER[23] - Departmental Car 52

13 Aug 2023 3 105
Departmental stock - there's a modern "scissor lift" hiding in there. This is used for staff access when working on the catenary [overhead electricity wires which supply power for the MER]. Note the wodden cable reel. Much more sensible than the traditional tower car.

MER[18] - No.7 at Derby Castle

30 May 2021 130
MER No.7 [Blue, Ivory & Teak livery] with trailer in tow arriving at the Derby Castle terminus. For this journey No.7 has been paired with Trailer 56, the disabled saloon. The horse tram [bulkhead car] in the background is the 1907 built No.44, in the Red White and Blue "Royal Tram" livery.

MER[17]/IoM[1] - Ramsey piers

07 Aug 2023 159
View from the MER of Ramsey's piers. Queen's Pier - there's a campaign to rebuild this, as the timber deck is suffering from the ravages of time and bad weather. [reposted on 7 August 2023 & unlocked 17th Aug 2023, previously posted 31 May 2021]

MER[17]/IoM[1] - Toastrack 41

31 May 2021 96
MER Car 41 - a toastrack trailer. The shutters are down because the weather was wet and windy. Note: Trailer 41 was built in 1930 by English Electric as a replacement for a vehicle lost in the shed fire. It has 44 seats, shutters and carries the red, white & teak livery.

MER[17]/IoM[1] - Ramsey terminus

31 May 2021 12 12 262
Car "21" & toastrack trailer "41" in the Ramsey terminus of the Manx Electric Railway. [this location is just short of the original station, you can see the poles in the background] {In 2023, the MER reinstated services to the original terminus} Note : Car 21 is classed as a 'winter saloon' with 48 seats and was built in 1899 by Milnes. Carries the green & white "nationalisation" livery - which is not the most popular.

MER[18] / IoM[2] - side by side

30 May 2021 106
An evening run on the MER [Manx Electric Railway] under special - gala - operating procedures. Car 16 - Roofed Toastrack with 56 seats, built 1898 by Milnes, running in Red & white "House-style" livery. & Car 32 - Roofed Toastrack with 56 seats, built 1906 by United Electric Car Co. running in the Green & White "Nationalisation" livery. Parallel running requires a good deal of concentration by the motormen, and travelling over level crossings with the roads, and just behind them, the Snaefell Mountain Railway, even greater watchfulness.
